What is Safeguarding?

The UK Government has defined the term 'safeguarding children' as: 'The process of protecting children from abuse or neglect, preventing impairment of their health and development, and ensuring they are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care that enables children to have the best outcomes’.

The Halberton & Uplowman Federation take the safety and wellbeing of the children in both schools very seriously and expect all staff, volunteers, governors and parents to do the same. To achieve this commitment, we ensure continuous development of all staff and have robust safeguarding policies and procedures in place that are updated in line with current legislation. We aim to promote a culture of safeguarding amongst staff and volunteers. We have a number of policies, procedures and agreed practices in place that support our safeguarding commitment:

Safer Recruitment – we always pursue identity and qualification checks and scrutinise references before employment.

We require evidence of enhanced Disclosure and Barring (DBS) clearance before employing any staff. All supply teachers, volunteers and outside club and coaching staff are required to provide evidence of an enhanced DBS clearance.

We also have policies to manage potential allegations against staff, complaints, whistleblowing and the use of physical intervention.

The Executive Headteacher reports to the governing body and updates on any policy or procedure related to safeguarding.

We adhere to data protection and confidentiality policies.

Where a child is suffering significant harm, or is likely to do so, action should be taken to protect that child. Staff are required to report any concerns about the wellbeing of our pupils to the Designated Safeguarding Officer or the deputy.

If you are concerned about the welfare of a child you are encouraged to report it to one of the above or if it is at a weekend, during school holidays, or if the school is closed, you may contact the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) team directly on 0345 155 1071.

Occasionally we need to share information and work in partnership with other outside agencies because we have concerns about a child's welfare. In this instance, we always ensure that any concern is discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that this would be detrimental to the child's welfare.

All adults who work in either school and designated governors have a responsibility to read and understand all safeguarding policies. This expectation is displayed at the school’s ‘Safeguarding Information for Staff and Volunteers’ which can be found in the staff room.

Radicalisation and Extremism

The Government defines extremism as vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

Some children are at risk of being radicalised: adopting beliefs and engaging in activities which are harmful, criminal or dangerous. Islamic extremism is the most widely publicised form and schools should also remain alert to the risk of radicalisation into white supremacy extremism.
